The story behind Opus X

The OpusX story is one of the cigar industry's greatest achievements. For decades, conventional wisdom held that the Dominican Republic could not produce quality cigar wrapper leaf. The thin, delicate outer layer contributes significantly to a cigar's appearance and flavor, and the consensus said Dominican soil and climate would not support it. Carlito Fuente refused to accept that limitation.

Working on his family's Chateau de la Fuente farm in the Dominican Republic, Carlito spent years experimenting with wrapper tobacco cultivation. By 1992 he had succeeded in growing a Dominican wrapper of exceptional quality: a sun-grown Rosado leaf that was rich, flavorful, and beautiful. Today, Opus X encompasses a range of releases that vary widely in availability and price.

• Perfecxion No. 2, No. 4, No. 5. The standard Opus X vitolas. The most commonly found formats and the right starting point.
• Lost City. Uses tobaccos from a special section of the Fuente farm where an ancient archaeological site was discovered. Rarer than standard Opus X and priced higher.
• Forbidden X. Features darker, longer-aged tobaccos. Released only in limited runs.
• Angel's Share. Uses tobaccos aged so long they have developed a natural crystallization. One of the most allocation-restricted releases.

The allocation reality (and how to actually get one)
